Turner Broadcasting

Pirates were popular in Hollywood from the early days of filmmaking until the mid-1960s, when the genre started to fade. Here are some of the better swashbuckling tales. Many are available on video.

"Treasure Island" (1934). A stirring adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson tale. Starring Wallace Beery, Jackie Cooper and Lionel Barrymore. Directed by Victor Fleming.

"The Buccaneer" (1938). The story of pirate-hero Jean Lafitte, who helps America in the War of 1812. Starring Fredric March, Franciska Gaal, Margot Grahame, Walter Brennan and Anthony Quinn. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille.

"The Sea Hawk" (1940). A high seas swashbuckling adventure. Starring Errol Flynn, Brenda Marshall, Claude Rains and Alan Hale.

"The Black Swan" (1942). Starring Tyrone Power, Maureen O'Hara and Anthony Quinn. Power plays a dashing pirate who rescues O'Hara. Film won an Oscar for cinematography.

"Reap the Wild Wind" (1942). Adventures on the high seas. Starring Ray Milland, John Wayne, Raymond Massey and Susan Hayward. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Film won an Oscar for special effects.

"The Princess and the Pirate" (1944). An offbeat pirate comedy starring Bob Hope, Virginia Mayo, Walter Brennan and Walter Slezak.

"The Pirate" (1948). A lavish musical starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. Garland thinks circus clown Kelly is really a Caribbean pirate. Directed by Vincente Minnelli.

"Treasure Island" (1950). The Walt Disney version starring Bobby Driscoll, Robert Newton and Basil Sydney. Newton is the definitive Long John Silver.

"Abbott and Costello Meet Captian Kidd" (1952). A pirate spoof that also stars Charles Laughton, Hillary Brooke and Leif Erickson.

"Against All Flags" (1952). Starring Errol Flynn, Maureen O'Hara and Anthony Quinn. Flynn plays the dashing British soldier who works his way into the pirate fortress.

"Blackbeard the Pirate" (1952). A drama with Robert Newton as the buccaneer. Also starring Linda Darnell, William Bendix and Irene Ryan.

"The Crimson Pirate" (1952). One of the classics. Starring Burt Lancaster, Nick Cravat, Eva Bartok and Christopher Lee. Set in the Mediterranean.

"Peter Pan" (1953). Walt Disney's animated classic.

"The Buccaneer" (1958). A remake of the 1938 film. Starring Yul Brynner, Charlton Heston, Clair Blom and Charles Boyer. Directed by Anthony Quinn.

"Blackbeard's Ghost" (1968). A Walt Disney comedy starring Peter Ustinov, Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette.

"The Pirates of Penzance" (1983). A film version of the Gilbert and Sullivan favorite with lots of theatricality. Starring Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury and Linda Ronstadt.
