Blackbeard's Top Ten
WHEN HIS GHOST VISITS BEAUFORT, THESE ARE BLACKBEARD'S TOP 10 THINGS TO DO:
10. Climb atop Fort Macon and look south. Underneath that water, a mile off shore, is a sunken ship believed to be the Queen Anne's Revenge.
9. Peek inside the N.C. Maritime Museum's watercraft center, where craftsman are restoring old boats and building new ones.
8. Stop in the General Store for a cone of hand-dipped ice cream.
7. Have a fresh fish sandwich for lunch at the Dockhouse Restaurant. Sit on the upstairs deck overlooking Beaufort Harbor.
6. Sign up for a Coastal Carolina Kayak Tour -- a day trip to nearby Bear or Carrot islands or an overnight trip to Shackelford Banks.
5. Visit Horatio Sinbad, Beaufort's own privateer, at Captain Sinbad's Barataria, the Pyrate Store.
4. Read the dates on the tombstones in Beaufort's Old Burying Ground, listed on the National Register. It contains grave sites from the early 1700s.
3. Walk the length of the Waterfront boardwalk and looks at the sailboats docked along the piers.
2. Enjoy the music, drink a cold beer and take in the local color at the Backstreet Pub.
1. Spend a night at the Delamar Inn -- a restored 1866 house with four antique furnished guest rooms. On Sunday, historian Jean Kell stops in to regale guests with tales of old Beaufort.
